The competition drew a total of 33 bands from throughout Southern California for a full day of musical competition and instruction.

The Lonesome Georges, which earned top honors in the college and independent bands category, was the only band in any category to earn a perfect 100 percent score from all three judges. The band includes Coronado High School seniors Nick Velez on drums, and Daniel Shaughnessy on saxophone, along with Ben Statz, Westview High School, piano, and Ben Levinson, Poway High School, bass.

The band performed four original selections written by Statz. The Lonesome Georges was formed in 2010 and has played numerous private parties, social functions, and restaurant dates in Coronado and around the county. The combo is scheduled to perform at the Coronado Promenade Concert on Sunday, June 3 in Spreckels Park.

The Coronado High School Jazz Ensemble placed first among intermediate bands. The CHS band’s program covered jazz standards by Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins. The ensemble was anchored by the rhythm section of Cory Noonan, drums; Michael Beeson, electric bass; Miranda Adams, acoustic bass; Kenneth Jacobson, guitar; and Velez on piano. The band’s brass section included Victor Obando, trombone and trumpeter Luis Heredia. A front line of woodwind players included Larissa Ryan, flute; Amy Aldrich, and Catheran White, clarinets; Adam Angelino, bass clarinet; Brad Matheus and Shaughnessy, tenor saxophones; and Sterling Henkin, alto saxophone. Shaughnessy was named the festival’s outstanding musician in the Intermediate category for his solos with the Coronado High School ensemble.

All bands paid to compete for the Jazz Fest titles with their fees, along with donations, and proceeds from the concession stands all benefiting the Instrumental Music program of the Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA).

A special highlight of Saturday’s Jazz Fest was a free big band concert at noon featuring the San Diego State University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Bill Yeager. The San Diego State musicians also held “salt-and-pepper” clinics throughout the day. In these learning laboratories, student musicians sat alongside their counterparts from the SDSU big band, playing jazz pieces and receiving tips and instruction on technique, tone, and other elements of performance.

“The Jazz Fest is a singular experience for young musicians,” said Lukas Schulze, CoSA Instrumental Music Director. “It goes beyond competition to really explore the fellowship of music and the transfer of knowledge and skills among peers and between generations.”

The CoSA instrumental music program provides intensive study in jazz, classical and other disciplines for musicians aspiring to professional performance careers.

Testimonials from SJP’s 2011 summer school faculty:

“I have been teaching on jazz workshops and summer schools for the past 25 years in places like the US, France, Germany, the UK and Ireland. It is without doubt that I say the Sligo Jazz Project ….is the most organized and smoothly ran workshop that I’ve ever been involved with”…. Jean Toussaint

“I had the pleasure of taking part in the Sligo Jazz Project 2011. The workshop and concerts were well organized and the faculty and participants were inspiring. Sligo is a lovely town, definitely worth a visit. Hope to see you there next year. ” … John Riley, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra drummer New York.

“It was a pleasure to teach on the Sligo Jazz Project. The students and faculty were great to work with and I think it was a particularly creative and enjoyable experience for everyone”… John Taylor

“Joining the line up for Sligo 2011 International Jazz Summer School and Festival was one of the most inspiring weeks i’ve had in sometime! And judging from the feedback from the students and punters, this great festival is destined to be a very important fixture on the annual Jazz festival map” … Cleveland Watkiss

“I had a wonderful week and feel completely invigorated by it. it’s such a lovely combination of teaching and playing, and your relaxed approach allows everyone to just do what they do. I thought it was a very strong faculty”. …Paul Clarvis, UK drummer/percussionist and educator.

“I had no concept of what a big operation it was until I experienced it for myself. The administration team you assembled was brilliant, the tutors were treated like Royalty and the programming of workshops, events and gigs made it considerable value for money for the participants of the workshops” … Linley Hamilton, tutor and BBC Radio Ulster Presenter

The prestigious Playboy Jazz Festival will return to the Hollywood Bowl June 16 – 17 with a rich roster of talent that includes the biggest names in jazz, along with future jazz headliners.

The performances will include an eclectic mix of everything from standards and blues to Latin beats and world fusion.
Headliners for the 34th annual Playboy Jazz Festival will include the legendary Ramsey Lewis, Ozomatli, the Christian McBride Big Band, Shelia E. and Boney James.

“It’s one of the great musical venues of the world,” said Boney James. “It’s always exciting to play at the Hollywood Bowl. It’s got such a history to it.”

James is making his fourth appearance at the festival.

“The Playboy Festival is such a venerable festival,” James said. “There have been so many great artists over the years that have played the festival.”

Saxophonist James has four gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award, and an NAACP award nomination to his credit.

He took up the saxophone after starting in elementary school as a clarinet player.

“They didn’t have any trumpets when I went to the music store, so I took home a clarinet,” James said. After a few years playing the clarinet James switched to the sax after his music teacher explained to him that he could be in the stage band in high school if he played sax.

“I loved it, I realized there was a lot of popular music that featured saxophones,” James said.

Emmy and Grammy-nominated Sheila E. marks her festival debut as a leader. She has previously performed several times at the festival with her legendary father, percussionist Pete Escovedo, and their family‘s famous band, with whom she still tours.

Sheila E. is also a star in her own right. She has served as the musical director for such superstars as Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Prince. She also toured with Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band in 2001, 2003 and 2006 and more recently performed alongside Marc Anthony in the American Idol Season 10 finale.

“The Hollywood Bowl is one of the most iconic places to perform in the world,” Sheila E. said. “To know of all the great music and the great musicians that have performed there, I am honored to be part of that community.”

Sheila E. said the Bowl is a great place to listen to and experience music.

“To sit outside, under the stars, enjoy the music with friends and family, it’s amazing,” she said.

Having played the festival on numerous occasions, Grammy-winner Ramsey Lewis will take to the Playboy stage for the first time with his popular Electric Band. Lewis is known for his hits “The In Crowd” and “Hang On Sloopy” – among others. He has earned three Grammy awards and seven Gold Records.

Currently riding high with the success of his fifth album, “Love After War,” RB artist Robin Thicke is making his highly anticipated festival debut. Thicke has composed and produced for such superstar artists as Michael Jackson, Marc Anthony, Christina Aguilera and many others.

Philadelphia born bass virtuoso and Grammy winner Christian McBride is one of the most recorded musicians of his generation. He has appeared on nearly 300 recordings as a sideman or leader and has played with such high caliber artists as Sting, The Roots, Kathleen Battle, Carly Simon and James Brown, to name a few.

Celebrated Los Angeles culture-mashers Ozomatli are returning to the Playboy stage for their fifth appearance. They offer an eclectic and notorious urban-Latino collision of hip-hop and salsa, dance hall and cumbia, samba and funk, meringue and comparsa, East L.A. RB and New Orleans jazz mixed with Jamaican reggae and Indian raga.

Celebrating their 50th anniversary, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is synonymous with Dixieland and of New Orleans jazz and blues. Making a return appearance, the group once again will bring the spirit of the Crescent City to the Playboy stage.
Famed comedian Bill Cosby will make his 31st appearance as emcee of the festival.

Single day tickets will be available through Ticketmaster starting February 16th. Patrons can purchase tickets online at www.ticketmaster.com, over the phone by calling (213) 365-3500 at any Ticketmaster outlet or by downloading a ticket order form available at www.playboyjazzfestival.com.

It would be hard to imagine a better companion for a tipsy tour through New York’s vibrant jazz scene in its golden age than Baron Timme Rosenkrantz. Emigrating from Denmark in pursuit of the music he loved, he became a friend to just about everyone he met. And he met just about everyone who mattered in jazz.

Rosenkrantz was indeed a Danish Baron, and his memoirs open with his 1934 arrival in New York and subsequent ill-advised foray into Harlem at a time when, to be blunt, white people simply weren’t safe there. Yet luck was on his side – charming, disarming, and without a bigoted bone in his body, by chance he met John Hammond (the man who discovered Billie Holiday and Bob Dylan, among many others). Hammond provided an initial introduction to the black clubs with the hottest jazz around. Soon Rosenkrantz was a familiar (and often the only white) face in every jumping joint in town.

Harlem Jazz Adventures, adapted and edited by international jazz journalist Fradley Hamilton Garner, is a fascinating and exuberant account of Rosenkrantz’ encounters with the giants of jazz. Anecdotal chapters tell of his encounters with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Benny Carter, Duke Ellington, and virtually every player in each and every band that passed through town.

Escapades include a raucous Christmas with Errol Garner, keyboard cutting contests with Art Tatum and Fats Waller, a brief stint as a gigolo, pitching a song to “the father of the blues” himself, W.C. Handy – and the list goes on and on. Rosenkrantz loved musicians as much as he loved jazz itself, and was always happy to share his other love – booze – leading to all-night parties the likes of which most only dream of.

Indeed, Rozentkrantz – despite his modest protestations, an amateur musician himself – immersed himself thoroughly in his beloved jazz. For a time he owned a record store, though he was more interested in the freewheeling jam sessions the back room provided space for. A part-time journalist, he published his impressions of American jazz in Danish newspapers. He produced a handful of recordings, ran a home recording service for musician friends, and hosted a jazz radio show. The only thing he didn’t do, it seems, is make much money from any of it; despite his noble lineage, Rozenkrantz, who loved to spread it around when he had it, was always scrambling for money. Still, as he himself writes,

“. these gigs ended like most of my American ventures. Lots of fun, and money for everyone but me. But I am not complaining. No one had a better time than I did. I would do it all over again and go home just as happy.”

Although it’s amply evident that he knows his way around a chord change, Rosenkrantz doesn’t set out to analyze the music.

“Let me say from the start that I am not a musician myself., I am not a critic, I’m just a little layman with an ear for music and a heart that beats for jazz.”

Instead we get colorful and intimate portraits of the men and women who made the music, all filtered through the happy recollections of a humble and unassuming rascal. Perfectly capturing the mood of the times, he takes us into the speakeasies and after-hours clubs frequented only by those “in the know,” places where musicians now regarded as titans of twentieth-century music would let loose after the “official” gigs ended.

Garner proves an ideal editor; it’s obvious that he genuinely likes his subject, and his translation from the original Danish sparkles. He’s scrupulously careful about accuracy – each chapter includes copious footnotes – but even his revisions are labors of love, gentle nudges rather than harsh corrections, and his notes are affectionate and warm.

Towards the end Rozenkrantz leads a friend on an elegiac journey through his old stomping grounds, the vast majority of the clubs and musicians long gone. An era had passed, and a saddened Rozenkrantz returned to Europe, passing away in 1969. True, jazz would no doubt have flourished anyway had Rozenkrantz never ventured into Harlem. But it couldn’t possibly have been as lively without the genial Dane.

A fascinating and illuminating glimpse into a now-vanished golden age, Harlem Jazz Adventures is essential reading for anyone interested in jazz or music in general.

Chuck Brown, who styled a unique mix of funk, soul and Latin party sounds to create go-go music in the nation’s capital, has died after suffering from pneumonia. He was 75.

Brown, widely acclaimed as the “Godfather of go-go” for his pioneering sound, died Wednesday at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. Hospital spokesman Gary Stephenson confirmed Brown had died after a hospital stay that began April 18.

Thanks to Brown and his deep, gravelly voice, go-go music was uniquely identified with Washington. That’s where he continued to play the city’s club circuit to a loyal audience late in life.

Mayor Vincent Gray said the nation’s capital will be a different place without him. Mournful admirers of the musician were called Wednesday evening to an impromptu candlelight vigil in Washington, where a sound truck was to blast a special Chuck Brown music mix to the crowd before a prayer session for him.

“Go-go is D.C.’s very own unique contribution to the world of pop music,” he said. “Today is a very sad day for music lovers the world over.”

In 2007 Brown told The Associated Press that go-go was influenced by sounds and fast beats he heard early in life, growing up in North Carolina and Virginia, combined with his experience later, playing with a Latin band.

“Go-go is a music that continues on and on, and it’s a call and response communication with the audience,” Brown said.

Go-go was heavy on percussion with drummers as lead players, accented by guitar riffs, keyboards and horns. Sometimes the musicians would play for two or three hours without stopping. In between tunes, Brown would keep the thunk of percussion going and talk to the crowd.

Brown’s hit “Bustin’ Loose” with his group, the Soul Searchers, helped define go-go’s sound. It spent several weeks atop the RB chart in 1979. Rapper Nelly later sampled Brown’s “Bustin’ Loose” in 2002 for his massive hit “Hot in Herre,” which won Nelly a Grammy.

Brown didn’t get credit at first, though, and “had to go through some legalities to get it right, but we knew, once we heard the song, that’s Chuck Brown,” said Gregory “Sugar Bear” Elliott, lead singer of the go-go band EU (Experience Unlimited.)

In 2007, rapper Eve sampled Brown’s song, “Blow Your Whistle,” in her hit single “Tambourine.”

Brown told the AP he admired such artists.

“Go-Go had some influence on rap because a lot of rap musicians come to my shows,” he said. “Some of them were students at Howard University. People like Puff Daddy, he’s been to see us when he was a young Howard University student.”

Spike Lee, a fan of Brown’s, used go-go for his movie “School Daze.”

“Chuck Brown Will Always Be `Bustin’ Loose’ — the Godfather of Go-Go,” Lee said through a spokeswoman.

Elliot said Brown had been a father figure since he was a teen when he aspired to be a rocker like Jimmy Hendrix but realized he wouldn’t make it that way as a young black man. When he saw Brown perform, he said he “instantly knew” what he wanted to do.

“Chuck Brown is going to live on forever. I’m going to make sure of that,” Elliott said. “When they see me, I want them to see a reflection of Chuck because he inspired me so much.”

He added: “The go-go sound is still going strong.”

When Brown was younger, he spent some time in jail. While behind bars, he traded five cartons of cigarettes for his first guitar. After he was freed in 1962, Brown played with several bands and then formed the Soul Searchers. To comply with terms of his parole, they couldn’t play where alcohol was served, so they went to churches, recreation halls and youth centers.

Brown’s daughter, Cherita Whiting, said he had died from complications with pneumonia and was gone too soon.

“I just want to tell all his fans, thank you, for lovin’ our dad,” she said. “He had the best fans in the world.”

During the crack epidemic of the 1980s, violence in some clubs affected go-go’s reputation. Brown said “we can’t blame the go-go for that,” though.

More recently, he said he had seen more grandparents at his shows, with an audience ranging in age from 18 to 60.

In 2005, he was named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Washington was always his most loyal fan base, Brown told the AP, and he was happy to play here the rest of his life.

Over the years, Jack White has taken umbrage with overzealous radio programmers, the Internet and, uh, Jason Stollsteimer (to name just a few) but in the new issue of Interview magazine, he lashes out at a new foe: The folks at Guinness World Records.

Yes, in what could only be described as the latest step in his ongoing transformation into the music world’s foremost eccentric — sorry, Kanye — White has lashed out at the venerable record-keeping institution, calling them “a very elitist organization” after they refused to acknowledge the White Stripes’ one-note performance in Newfoundland (seen in their 2010 doc “Under Great White Northern Lights”) as “the shortest music concert ever.”

“I was thinking that afterwards we could contact the Guinness World Records people and see if we could get the record for the shortest concert of all time. So we did it, but ultimately, they turned us down,” White tells astronaut Buzz Aldrin (for real) in the Interview piece. “[They're] a very elitist organization. There’s nothing scientific about what they do. They just have an office full of people who decide what is a record and what isn’t … so something like the shortest concert of all time, they didn’t think [it] was interesting enough to make it a record. I don’t know why they get to decide that, but, you know, they own the book.”

Well, yes, they do own the book … and, as it turns out, the Stripes’ Newfoundland concert was featured in the 2009 edition of it, as a spokesperson for Guinness World Records pointed out to MTV News on Thursday (May 17). Of course, they’d subsequently remove the notation in later editions, though it had little to do with elitism and more to do with the simple fact that Guinness had no way of qualifying what actually counted as a performance.

“We received a large volume of applications from bands and performers seeking to beat this record. We got an influx of individuals claiming that simply appearing on stage was enough to qualify them for this record,” the spokesperson wrote in an email to MTV News. “It became increasingly difficult for us to measure this objectively (for example, how many members of the crowd need to be able to see the performer before they disappear off stage?)

“The nature of competing to make something the ‘shortest’ by its very nature trivializes the activity being carried out, and Guinness World Records has been forced to reject many claims of this kind,” the spokesperson continued. “As such, we have closed record categories for similar designations such as the shortest song, shortest poem, and also the record of shortest concert currently in question.”

Of course, the spokesperson was quick to add that Guinness World Records “admires the band and we encourage them to attempt any of the 40,000 active records currently housed in our database.” And knowing White, we’re pretty sure he’ll take them up on that offer. Soon.

Many musicians talk about their albums being born from a river of inspiration, but few can say it as literally as the Okee Dokee Brothers. The Twin Cities kids-music stars spent 30 days last summer floating down the Mississippi with their instruments and a camera crew to create their new CD/DVD combo, “Can You Canoe?” Joe Mailander, the sandy-haired Okee Dokee, said the idea was “to come up with adventure songs that sound more real.” Things got real, all right. The bandmates nearly got blown away by a storm one night. Things also got a little unreal as the duo was greeted by “ambassadors” in Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher costumes in Mark Twain‘s hometown of Hannibal, Mo. After finishing the trip in St. Louis, they made another trek to record the results in Woodstock, N.Y., where they called up the Band’s Garth Hudson on a whim and landed him as accordionist for two songs. “He really believed in the idea of us encouraging families to get out and enjoy the outdoors more,” Mailander said. Fittingly, the Brothers are returning to the Mississippi riverfront for the “Canoe” release party, 11 a.m. Saturday at Father Hennepin Park, on the north side of Minneapolis’ Stone Arch Bridge. -CHRIS RIEMENSCHNEIDER

Not a day at the beach

Duluth native Gena Lee Nolin, who made a name for herself by running down the beach on “Baywatch” and swinging through the jungle on “Sheena,” told FoxNews.com that for the past decade, she’s struggled with Hashimoto’s disease, which attacks the thyroid and can lead to weight issues. Nolin, 40, started to notice problems while filming “Sheena” in the early 2000s. “There was definitely idle chitchat on the set that maybe I should work out more or eat less, but nothing made a difference,” she said. Doctors finally diagnosed the condition seven months ago and she has become a spokesperson for medical groups trying to shed light on the disease. Even earlier, Nolin worried about her weight. “If you’re not fit as an absolute fiddle, they will take a picture of you and plaster it everywhere,” Nolin told I.W. back in 1997. Now she says she’s on the road to recovery and is seeing improvements since following a gluten-free diet. -NEAL JUSTIN

Church of comics

Anyone who loves comic books knows SpringCon is a spiritual experience. Where else can a geek wearing a Spider-Man costume feel so at home among thousands of people? But when the annual two-day comics convention invades the State Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday, a couple events get downright ethereal. Sunday morning’s chapel service — yes, they have chapel service at a comics convention — will feature “resident demon-slayer” Ron Hartley talking about the “mistakes that continue to haunt you” (and presumably how to avenge them). Also that morning is the “Spiritual Themes in Comics” panel, which will investigate how our everyday superhero powers “affect the entire course of our lives, not to mention every aspect of life.” Wrap your head around that one. Or just buy some comics. -TOM HORGEN

Brick-solid

When Slash and Myles Kennedy came back for their encore at the Brick on Monday night, you knew they meant business. The legendary Guns N’ Roses guitarist and his new singer returned with their shirts off and their guns blazing. Slash, in particular, looked like he’s been hitting the weight room the way he used to hit the pipe. It was a fitting finale for a 13/4-hour set that was at times chest-beatingly cheesy but certainly sounded muscular and fit. It also proved to be a good test for the Brick. The new venue has been moving a lot of its bigger concerts to Myth, but this one turned out just fine, with a crowd under 1,500. It was packed, sure, but it was never impossible to find a view of the stage. New TVs in the back and in the corners appeased those fans who didn’t make the effort. Plus, the club’s sound system and acoustics are impeccable. That alone makes it a preferable venue to Epic and Roy Wilkins Auditorium. -CHRIS RIEMENSCHNEIDER

Arts groups rally

Fifty-five arts organizations announced Monday that they will work toward defeating the proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and civil unions. Sheila Smith, executive director of Minnesota Citizens for the Arts, said the amendment would “limit our state’s ability to recruit the best and the brightest to be a part of our state’s future.” Joe Dowling, director of the Guthrie Theater, and Ryan French, director of marketing and public relations for the Walker Art Center, both spoke at a news conference at which the coalition was announced. -GRAYDON ROYCE
